Sweden considering second sidewalk project
While waiting to learn whether the Town of Sweden and Village of Brockport will be awarded a NYS DOT grant for the construction of a sidewalk on Owens Road, Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson has begun planning a new sidewalk project for Holley Street from the village/town line west to Redman Road. The village sidewalk currently ends in front of the College at Brockport’s commissary building.
Sweden will be pursuing a different grant source for the proposed Holley Street sidewalk. The annual Community Development Block Grant targets very specific areas in the Town based on census block information. The Holley Street sidewalk project falls within that area, the Owens Road sidewalk project does not.
The Holley Street sidewalk project is approximately 3,000 feet in length and would be constructed within the Town’s right-of-way. The benefit would be to connect the existing sidewalks on Redman Road into the Village. Increasing pedestrian safety is a priority for Johnson. The grant application is due in February and the Town should receive notification about the application’s success in late spring or early summer. If the grant application is successful, the sidewalk would be constructed in 2020.
