Sweden event benefits Brockport Food Shelf
The Town of Sweden’s disc golf course, located at the Sweden Town Park on Redman Road, was the site of the Rochester Disc Golf Club’s annual Ice Bowl on February 24. Ice Bowls are a nationwide fundraising effort supported by the professional disc golf association. Clubs across the country hold Ice Bowls during January and February. Two rules apply – the bowl cannot be cancelled due to weather and all proceeds must be donated to a local charity.
In Sweden, 54 golfers participated on a day with temperatures hovering in the low 20s and with more than a foot of snow on the ground. The Rochester Club raised $915 and 20 bags of groceries to benefit the Brockport Food Shelf. According to club member Ryan Hand, it was the largest amount raised by the Rochester Club since the Ice Bowl’s inception.
Sweden’s disc golf course opened last summer. It is open year round and there is no fee for the general public to play. Local volunteers, spearheaded by Sweden Town Board Member Tom Ferris, helped with the planning and installation of the course. Frisbee-like disc are available at sporting good stores and the cost of the discs is minimal. Disc golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, making it a perfect addition to the other playing fields found at Sweden Town Park, according to Ferris.
